Authorities from the autonomous Somali region Puntland, succeeded in freeing a ship captured by Somali pirates, according to Transport Minister Mohamed Rage.
The 15,000 ton MV QSM Dubai was sailing in a recommended transit corridor in the Gulf of Aden when it was seized by pirates early Wednesday, according to a report by the BBC.
The pirates refused to surrender and there was a brief shootout. The pirates killed the ship’s Pakistani captain before they were overtaken. Seven pirates were arrested, according to the report.
The ship, with 24 crew members, was carrying sugar from Brazil to Somalia. Two Somali troops were injured in the confrontation, according to Al Jazeera.
