The suspect in the shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin that left seven people dead, including the gunman, was identified as a U.S. Army veteran who had ties with white supremacists.
Wade Michael Page, 40, was the former leader of a white supremacist heavy metal band, reported The New York Times. The Southern Poverty Law Center described him in 1998 as a “frustrated neo-Nazi” who was involved in the white supremacist music scene.
Mark Potok, a fellow at the nonprofit civil rights organization, said that Page played for bands including Definite Hate and End Apathy.
“This guy was in the thick of the white supremacist music scene and, in fact, played with some of the best known racist bands in the country,” he said.
President Barack Obama made a televised statement on Monday, saying that “all of us recognize that these kinds of terrible, tragic events are happening with too much regularity for us not do to some soul-searching,” according to Politico.
