Oleksandr Ruvin, a senior forensic scientist from Ukraine, was shot in the leg late in 2015 while leading the investigation on the Malaysia Airlines jet MH17 crash.

Police have now arrested his suspected attacker, who claimed he was trying to assassinate him over the plane crash’s probe.

In October of 2015, a report was published confirming the plane was brought down by a missile fired from the ground in eastern Ukraine.

The prosecuting office in Ukraine detaining the assassin plans to hold a public briefing surrounding his “attempt to murder the chief expert on the case of the downed Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777.”

298 passengers and crew members were killed during the routine flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, which took a route passing over an area of conflict in eastern Ukraine.

Claiming the tragedy was avoidable, the Dutch Safety Board launched a criminal investigation to determine the attackers who fired the missile.

Local media has reported that the necessary evidence needed to close the case should come before the second half of 2016.
