TORONTO—Carolina Veliz, a 3-D artist with a Toronto-based toy and game company, described Shen Yun’s Sunday afternoon performance at the Sony Centre as “a very amazing and culturally empowering show.”
“Everything was very different and very nice. The music was perfect with the performance. The choreography was amazing. It was stunning,” she said.
“It was inspiring at all different levels that I’m not used to, colour-wise and everything, musically and artistically.”
Ms. Veliz said she particularly enjoyed the piece, An Early Spring, in which the dancers deftly twirl handkerchiefs with perfect balance and precision.
“It was actually pretty impressive the way that they used the handkerchiefs, the skills that they have to have to do that—they were pretty great. I was amazed. I thought there was some kind of a trick behind it but I could see—actually I think we were six rows from the stage, so I was pretty close and it added to the fascination. It was actually pretty awesome.”
She also praised Shen Yun’s renowned backdrops, which interact with the story-based dances to the extent that characters appear to move from the stage into the backdrop and vice versa.
“I think it mixed perfectly well with the performance, they matched perfectly. I’ve never seen live go-through, the way that they jumped and then went into the animation—I’ve never seen that before and that was actually pretty awesome,” she said.
