During an interview on CBS’s “60 Minutes,” Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney said his campaign does not need a “turnaround,” when CBS’s Scott Pelley suggested he is slipping in recent polls.
“Well, actually, we’re tied in the polls. We’re all within the margin of error. We bounce around, week-to-week, day-to-day,” Romney said in an interview published online that will be aired Sunday evening on “60 Minutes.”
In the next week, Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, are spending several days in Ohio. No Republican has ever won the presidency without winning Ohio, which has 18 electoral votes. Obama will visit Kent State University in Ohio Wednesday.
Romney visited Colorado on Sunday, will later spend three days in Ohio, and then go to Virginia—all three of which are swing states. Obama won all three in 2008, while George W. Bush won them in 2004.
Last week, a secretly recorded video showed Romney describing 47 percent of the country as people who do not pay income taxes, among other things. Romney said the comments were not “elegantly stated.” He made similar comments in the “60 Minutes” interview.
Romney said his campaign “doesn’t need a turnaround. We’ve got a campaign which is tied with an incumbent president to the United States,” Romney said.
“I’ve got a very effective campaign. It’s doing a very good job. But not everything I say is elegant,” he said.
Romney added that his campaign will “go forward with my message that this is a time to reinvigorate the American economy, not by expanding government and raising taxes on people, but instead by making sure government encourages entrepreneurship and innovation and gets the private sector hiring again.”
