Peter Jackson, who recently announced he would direct The Hobbit in two installments, will start filming the Lord of the Rings prequel in early 2011, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The project was greenlighted on Monday after months of labor disputes between the New Zealand Actors’ Equity, SAG, and Jackson.
“The two films based on ’The Hobbit‘ are now greenlit and will begin principal photography in February 2011, under the direction of Peter Jackson,” said a joint statement from New Line president and COO Toby Emmerich, Warner Bros. president and COO Alan Horn, and MGM co-CEO Steve Cooper, according to the Reporter.
The announcement does not mean that the movie will be shot in New Zealand. The Reporter noted that how the dispute is resolved will determine where the movie will be shot.
Deadline.com reported that Ian McKellan and Andy Serkis play Gandalf and Gollum, as they did in the Lord of the Rings trilogy of films.
