Hundreds of Occupy protesters marched through Charlotte, N.C., Sunday to decry perceived corporate greed prior to the Democratic National Convention that will be held in the city.
“Bail out people, not banks,” one sign read, according to NBC News. Other signs and slogans had similar messages.
Ray Suarez, a senior correspondent with the PBS NewsHour, tweeted that he just watched Occupy “march through Charlotte, who were in turn watched by enough cops to invade a small country.”
Groupings of tents appeared overnight in Marshall Park in uptown Charlotte, and the Occupy protesters said that they would not leave.
“I could have gotten a place to stay here but we’re here specifically to occupy in a public space where people can see us,” protester Yoni Miller told WCNC television. She added that they will be there for “the short term” only.
The police chief of Charlotte, Rodney Monroe, told The Associated Press that the march was relatively uneventful.
