NBC on Sunday admitted that it made a mistake in airing an edited phone call from George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer who allegedly shot Trayvon Martin, it was reported.

NBC News President Steve Capus sent Reuters a statement, which said the move was “a mistake and not a deliberate act to misrepresent the phone call.”

The edit appeared on the “Today” morning show last week, making it appear that Zimmerman told police over the phone that Martin was black. However, the full conversation showed that he only said the suspect in question was black when he was asked by a police dispatcher.

Sources told Reuters and other news agencies that the producer of the clip was fired last week. Other people who were involved were punished, Capus added.

However, the station reiterated that the clip was the result of “an editing error in the production process,” the news agency said.
