The BRW’s 2010 Young Rich list has revealed that Queensland mining entrepreneur Nathan Tinkler has taken the number one spot on the list of richest Australians under the age of 40.

Tinkler, formerly an electrician, now has a fortune worth $610 million, according to BRW magazine.

The 34-year-old has near doubled his wealth since raising $475 million to buy a Queensland coal mine. He then made an estimated $400 million after investing the money in the $1.2 billion Aston Resources float.

Second place went to London-based hedge fund manager Greg Coffey ($406 million), while another London hedge fund manager, Hillton Nathanson, took third place with $395 million, Yahoo Finance reported.

In fourth place is Sydney property developer and CEO of Precision Group, Shaun Bonett ($360 million).

Also in Sydney, Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar achieved joint fifth place with a combined fortune of $314 million from the technology duo’s 16 per cent stake in software company Atlassian worth $US60 million.

At $61 million, Nicole Patterson topped the list of only seven women featuring in this year’s Young Rich list. Patterson is joint owner of insurance builder/repairer company Pattersons Insurerbuild with husband Stuart.
