Michael Jackson’s mother and his three children have denounced AEG Live, promoters of the “This is It” tour that the singer was scheduled to start around the time of his death in June last year.
Katherine Jackson, the megastar’s mother and now guardian of his children, has accused AEG Live of “putting its desire for massive profits” ahead of the singer’s health and safety, according to ABC News.
The 50-year-old died of a heart attack following a rehearsal at the end of June, 2009, only days before the 50 concert tour was due to begin in London in July.
“AEG’s action and inactions led to Michael Jackson’s death on June 25, 2009,” the lawsuit said, accusing the promoter of negligence, breach of contract and fraud, Billboard.com reported.
“The purpose of this lawsuit is to prove to the world the truth about what happened to Michael Jackson, once and for all,” the family’s lawyer Brian Panish said in a statement.
The plaintiff argues that AEG is responsible for the actions of Jackson’s personal doctor and offered no proper sanitary facilities to the singer. The argument follows that AEG’s actions and inactions lead to the singer’s death.
Kenny Ortega, director of the tour “This Is It”, is also named in the Jackson family’s lawsuit.
AEG Live’s lawyer Marvin Putnam has discounted the lawsuit, according to AP.
“The lawsuit is inaccurate, unsubstantiated and meritless,” he said in a statement. “Dr. Murray was Mr. Jackson’s longtime personal physician. AEG did not choose him, hire him or supervise him.”
Los Angeles Forensic Department determined that the idol’s death was homicide due to a powerful anaesthetic used as a sleeping aid, along with other sedatives and analgesics. His physician, Dr Conrad Murray, has pleaded not guilty to the charge of involuntary manslaughter and is awaiting trial. This lawsuit was filed separately by Jackson’s father, Joe Jackson.
The new lawsuit also seeks to address the psychological damage suffered by Jackson’s eldest son, Prince Michael, who witnessed the death.
