PHOENIX, Ariz.—A full house of enthusiastic theater-goers attended an afternoon showing of Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Orpheum Theatre March 10, which ended with a standing ovation and a long round of applause.

Frank Carrillo, a former educator, was among the audience members. Mr. Carrillo is the president of Tempe, Mesa, and Phoenix Council of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), which is the nation’s largest Latino civil rights and advocacy group, according to its website. He was also the past state director and national far west vice president of LULAC, as well as the recipient of the National Aztec Award for Civil Rights at LULAC’s National Convention in 1998.

Mr. Carrillo loved the message he received from the performance.

“[It was] excellent. I attend a lot of these events. This is an extremely elegant performance for the public to be involved, kids to see, because there is a lot of knowledge involved in this. This is what we need. This type of a performance, this sends a big message to the home that life can be different—quiet, peaceful, elegant, and enjoyable,” he said.

Shen Yun is a New York-based classical Chinese music and dance company that tours 100 cities worldwide each year with an all-new production. With three companies that perform simultaneously around the world, Shen Yun is currently in North America, Europe and Asia. Its mission is to restore and revive traditional Chinese culture.

“For 5,000 years, divine culture flourished in the land of China. Humanity’s treasure was nearly lost, but through breathtaking music and dance, Shen Yun is bringing back this glorious culture,” Shen Yun’s website reads. “Principles such as benevolence and justice, propriety and wisdom, respect for the heavens, and divine retribution, all come to life, washing over the audience. Originating from Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, these ideals are the essence of traditional Chinese culture.”

Mr. Carrillo appeared to be amazed by the performance.

“It’s such an excellent performance, the way it’s done is almost unbelievable. It’s almost like it’s real, but it’s ... it’s just excellent. I can’t say anything negative about it,” he said.

He would highly recommend Shen Yun.

“Oh, definitely,” he said, adding that anybody who has the opportunity should see Shen Yun.

New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has three touring companies that perform simultaneously around the world. Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company is scheduled to perform at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts, Las Vegas, Nevada, March 15–17.
