The police chief for Miami was fired for insubordination on Monday by the city commission in a 3-2 vote, according to media reports.
Miguel Exposito, who had been with the police force since 1974 and served as chief for the past two years, was suspended last week for failing to follow orders, according to the Miami Herald.
He is said to have refused an order to demote three high-ranking officers in the police force and did not come up with a plan to decrease spending on overtime, according to the newspaper.
“Elected officials have decided my service with the city must end,” he said.
Al Milian, an attorney with the city manager’s office, who was seeking to oust Exposito, said, “No police officer, regardless of rank and longevity is above the rules and the law,” according to the local WSVN-7 station.
