The New York Mets have announced that they have shut down starting pitcher Johan Santana for the remainder of the season, according to a report on their website.
General manager Sandy Alderson made the announcement Wednesday as the Mets placed Santana on the disabled list with lower back inflammation. “I’m very confident that he'll be back next season and ready to go, and hopefully in a stronger position than he was coming into this year,” Alderson said. “If you look back at the season and what we reasonably could have expected at the beginning of the year, he’s actually accomplished quite a lot.”
Indeed Santana, who missed all of 2011 following left anterior capsule shoulder surgery went 6–9 with a 4.85 ERA this season, though he had a great first three months of the season, posting a 2.76 ERA through his first 16 starts. Santana pitched the first no-hitter in Mets history on June 1.
