NEW YORK—The 2012 season will mark the 50th anniversary for the New York Mets and on Wednesday they unveiled their plans for the season-long celebration, including a new logo to go with their new uniforms.

David Wright, who was on hand to model the new home uniform, was proud to be a part of the celebration, “Growing up kind of a displaced Mets fan it means a lot to be here today to be a part of the celebration. Although things haven’t gone well for us lately, there is a lot to celebrate in this organization.”

The Mets will wear home pinstripes, and white and road greys, which is more in line with the inaugural look. Dave Howard, executive vice president of Business Operations said, “We thought it was an appropriate opportunity to go to a more traditional look.”

If the Mets acquire a player in the offseason with the number 50, he will have to find a new number, as that number belongs to the fans this year. Mets broadcaster Howie Rose, who emceed the press conference said, “It’s hard to have a 50th anniversary without the dedication, the passion, and the loyalty of our fans.”

At each of the 81 home games one lucky fan will receive a number 50 jersey with the word “FANTASTIC” on the back. Six season ticket holders from the 1962 season were on hand and each was given one of the jerseys as a thank-you.

The 50th anniversary logo is reminiscent of the original logo with the New York skyline behind the “NY.” Rose said, “The Mets logo endures as a symbol, all the Mets have been and all that lies ahead.” The logo will be placed on left sleeve of the uniforms and on the back of the caps.

On Monday Nov. 28 a limited number of specially priced tickets will go on sale to commemorate the anniversary. The five-game plans start at $50.
