Maytag issued a recall of its dishwasher due to reports of fire caused by malfunctioning units. The company is recalling units made at both of their production sites in Iowa and Michigan.
Maytag issued the recall of 1.7 million dishwashers in response to 12 reports of dishwashers catching fire. The fires resulted from malfunctioning heating elements. Kitchens have been damaged from the fires but no deaths or injuries have been reported.
A statement from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission revealed the specifics of the recall online. There is a long list of serial number beginnings and endings to help Maytag owners determine if their dishwashers are at risk.
Maytag dishwashers made between February 2006 and April 2010 could catch fire depending on the model. Owners of a recalled machine should stop use immediately and unplug the dishwasher.
Maytag asks customers to call as soon as possible for an at home repair. The company is also offering rebates for customers. The rebates are $150 for the MDB7759, MDB7609 or MDBH979 models or $250 for the MDB8959, MDB8859, MDB7809 or MDB7709 models.
Maytag can be reached toll free at 1-800-344-1274. An online store locating application is available through www.Maytag.com.
