The Major League Soccer (MLS) All-Stars were thrashed 5–2 in a friendly match in Houston, Texas by the richest sports team according to Forbes magazine, Manchester United. The game was played in front of 70,728 fans, the fourth biggest crowd in the U.S. to ever witness any kind of All-Star game.
This game was anticipated to be a very competitive match after United lost to the Kansas City Wizards 2–1 last week. It was clear, from the opening, that United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and his Red Devils played to win.
After only 25 seconds of play the Red Devils struck with a goal from Federico Macheda due to a poor pass by Kevin Alston. Then Macheda found the back of the net again with a header in the 12th minute. His second goal came off a corner kick from captain Ryan Giggs, a veteran of Man U of 20 seasons.
In the first half of play much of the momentum was in favor of the Red Devils, with only a few chances for the MLS All-Stars.
The MLS All-Stars strength was blighted due to key players Landon Donovan, Edson Buddle, and Dwayne DeRosario all playing in Champions League on Tuesday night. Donovan played 90 minutes on Tuesday night.
In the second half, the MLS All-Stars got on the board with a goal in the 62nd minute—a header inside the six-yard box by Houston’s own Brian Ching.
The MLS goal came right after the newly acquired Mexican superstar Javier Hernandez checked into the game for United. Hernandez had two goals in the World Cup. He was able to find the back of the net in the 83rd minute, scoring in his first appearance for Manchester United.
Within 10 minutes of the MLS goal, the Red Devils answered with a goal from Darron Gibson. Then about two minutes later, Tom Cleverly scored for the Red Devils after some impressive footwork.
The MLS All-Stars were able to put one more in ball in the net from former Houston and now Toronto FC star Dwayne DeRosario before the game finished.
In large part, the game seemed to be a redemption game for Manchester United after losing to the Wizards. About 75 percent of the possession was with the Red Devils. There were moments when the MLS All-Stars had some momentum but with the depth of Manchester United, it was very difficult for that momentum to be maintained.
Many of United’s key players were not in the lineup like Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville.
Chivas Mexico will be up next for Manchester United on July 30th as they continue their North American tour. MLS will continue with season play.
