Thierry Henry was credited with both goals for the Red Bulls as they got their first win since the end of April, giving themselves 3 points and back on top of the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference.

The Red Bulls came out looking for the first strike and within in the first minute of the half they created a chance with forward Luke Rodgers who couldn’t put enough on the ball and missed wide right. New York leads Major League Soccer in goals that are scored in the first fifteen minutes of the game.

New York kept up the pressure through much of the first half where Henry scored his first goal of the night, deflecting a ball off New England Revolution veteran defender Ryan Cochran.

A game changer for the Revolution was when Ousmane Dabo had to come out of the game because of an injury. The Revolution offense didn’t seem to recover from his loss until the second half, when they began to pick apart the Red Bulls defense.

New York was visibly disoriented having five of its starters away on international play, each one representing their respective countries in the Gold Cup. With the absence in the backfield of Rafael Marquez the Red Bulls couldn’t maintain a strong defensive front, often times having a staggered back line. “Lack of concentration … every time there was a cross it seemed we were in danger”, Henry told Fox Soccer after the game.

Missed opportunities on both ends of the field kept this from being a high-scoring affair. Halfway through the second half you could sense frustration coming from Henry. After having led rookie Corey Hertzog with a textbook cross that would have been an easy goal if Hertzog had just finished the run, Henry, only moments later in the same situation again, offered up his excellent handling and passing abilities to a more experienced Medhi Ballouchy who just couldn’t find the back of the net.

The Red Bulls will have to continue their intense efforts and receive outstanding play from Thierry Henry if they want to be successful in the month of June when almost half of their starting lineup will be out on international duty.

Next week the Red Bulls will begin their four game Western Conference trip, starting on June 19th with the expansion Portland Timbers.
