John Lithgow won an Emmy Award for his performance as a guest star on the show Dexter, in which he played a serial killer.
His character, known as the “Trinity Killer,” was lauded by the panel of the Creative Arts Emmys, getting him the Best Guest Actor award. This is the fifth time Lithgow has won an Emmy.
“I’m glad to have every chance to thank Matt Blank and Bob Greenblatt at HBO,” he said, even though the two men he named were the heads of Showtime, a competing network, and the network which actually produced “Dexter.”
He became aware of his mistake after the awards ceremony, reported Access Hollywood.
“I’ll never live that down,” he said. “They’ll probably be taking this back now.”
Lithgow, who received much acclaim in the past on the comedy show “3rd Rock From the Sun,” said that he found on-screen chemistry between him and the show’s anti-hero protagonist, played by Michael Hall.
“The ‘Trinity Killer’ was such an amazing character they created and such a wonderful piece of suspenseful storytelling, it just kept people wanting to see the next week’s episode,” Lithgow told Acess Hollywood.
Hall is currently going through remission from Hodgkin’s lymphoma and is “doing very, very well,” Lithgow said.
