Homer Simpson, the comedic and sarcastically moronic father figure for Fox’s long running cartoon show, The Simpsons, topped a recently posted list of the 100 Greatest Characters from television and movies.
Entertainment Weekly published a special edition of their magazine focused on a list of the 100 Greatest Characters on television and in movies. EW said its “writers and editors ... carefully deliberated, debated, argued, and bickered over who would make the cut and where they deserved to be ranked.”
The hilarious doughnut-loving Homer Simpson came out as number one.
Homer is described on The Simpsons official website as being a busy man in hilariously chaotic world.
“He juggles the roles of husband, father, safety inspector at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, bowler, beer drinker, astronaut, small business owner and dreamer, and makes it all look easy.”
Homer Simpson could not provide his hysterical antics without the rest of his family that includes his wife Marge, his son Bart, and his two daughters Lisa and Maggie. The family has plethora of bizarre friends, neighbors, coworkers, and enemies that fill out the cast. The Simpsons have sold millions of dollars worth of fan merchandise including everything from towels, to dinnerware, and DVD copies of previous seasons’ episodes.
Entertainment Weekly put the iconic Harry Potter in the number two position on the list, with Buffy from Buffy The Vampire Slayer as number three. The list was created to help celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Entertainment Weekly. The magazine published its first edition in February of 1990, and was created by the Time branch of Time Warner.
The Simpsons have served as a satire of American culture for more than 20 years. The show is based in the fictional town of Springfield that is arguably a microcosm of stereotypical American behaviors. The show has won 25 Prime Time Emmy Awards along with 26 Annie Awards.
