Protesting for your country’s democratic future can be hard and hungry work, and having McDonald’s for every meal can only support one’s health and spirit for so long.
Thankfully, there’s Granny Huang to rescue Hong Kong’s student protesters from (eventually) becoming a tad overweight like filmmaker Morgan Spurlock in “Super Size Me.”
The 65-year-old lady recently took to the streets, not to protest, but to make and hand out tasty rice noodle rolls to the pro-democracy supporters.
According to an Apple Daily report, Granny Huang, a native of Kowloon, was at Admiralty on the second day of Occupy Central to show her support for the students.
She saw the students surviving on McDonald’s every day, and overheard a number of them wishing that they could have rice noodle rolls for a change.
Having witnessed the protesters’ excellent behavior, conduct (“they even cleaned the public restrooms!”), and feeling slightly ashamed that she wasn’t taking the lead in pushing for democratic reform in Hong Kong, Granny Huang made up her mind to help out in small, but meaningful way.
On Thursday, Oct. 16, Granny Huang made her way to Admiralty again to whip up her special “Umbrella Rice Noodle Rolls” for the students.
Granny Huang places the rice noodle rolls in a paper cup, and tops them off with a healthy dressing — cucumber and tomato slices, cauliflower seed oil, and homemade peanut butter. By the end of the day, Granny Huang had handed out about 200 cups of “Umbrella Rice Noodle Rolls.”
In light of recent police brutality in clearing out protest sites, no one can tell what the future holds for the Umbrella Movement.
However, Granny Huang is very sure that the Hong Kong government led by Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying will end up as the biggest losers because they resorted to violence in dealing with unarmed, peaceful students.
Granny Huang also sincerely hopes that the students will remain pure in their beliefs and actions, and never get blinded by petty interests.
