The New Jersey Devils were shut out 4–0 by the Florida Panthers at the Bank Atlantic Center on Tuesday night.
The Devils came into the game on a hot streak, winning 7 of their last 10 games.
They outshot the Panthers 36–28 but couldn’t get a single shot past Florida netminder, Tomas Vokoun, who played a stellar game.
The Panthers scored just after the four-minute mark of the first period. Stephen Weiss, who tapped in a rebound, notched his 10th goal of the season with assists from Bryan McCabe and Michael Frolik.
Starting the second period, the Devils continued to outshoot the Panthers, just as they did in the first, but the Panthers would score again with under eight minutes to go in the period.
Richard Zednik scored his 12th goal of the season on the power play. The guilty devil was defenseman Bryce Salvador who took a hooking penalty.
But the Florida onslaught wouldn’t stop there.
Minutes later, they scored again off a quick shot by talented youngster Nathan Horton, putting the home team up 3–0.
In the third period, the Panthers stiffened their defense and limited the Devils shots on goal.
As was the case all game, the Panthers took everything the Devils threw at them and made the most of their offensive chances.
Putting an exclamation point on the night, the Panthers got their fourth and final goal with a quick shot by winger Corey Stillman.
Stillman was sitting in front of the Devils’ net and was fed a nifty pass from Weiss, who skirted around Clemmensen for the assist.
With the win, the Panthers are quickly gaining recognition as one of the hottest teams in the NHL with a 13–4–3 record in their last 20 games.
They also moved into sixth place overall in the Eastern Conference with 66 points, leapfrogging the New York Rangers.
The Devils dropped to 37–18–3 for 77 points and remain in third place behind the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals. They still have a comfortable eight-point lead atop the Atlantic Division.
Facing the Panthers, the Devils simply ran into a hot team and ran out of steam. Look out for a potential Devils–Panthers match-up in the playoffs.
For New Jersey, questions remain regarding the return of star goalie, Martin Brodeur. Without question, Scott Clemmensen has played extremely well in his absence, but having Brodeur ready for the playoffs is critical for the Devils’ long-term success.
