Denny Hamlin crept up from behind to win the Samsung 500 at the Texas Motor Speedway, but he didn’t make his move to the front of the pack until the race was more than 300 laps old.

A nine-car wreck during the 318th lap on the 1.5-mile course worked in Hamlin’s favor. NASCAR heavyweights Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson both got caught up in the accident, giving Hamlin more room to work with, reported NASCAR.com.

Hamlin made his most important push past previous race leader Jeff Burton on the 323rd lap and held his ground until the bitter end.

Hamlin was driving while recovering from surgery on his left knee, which he underwent on March 30. He didn’t let the discomfort hinder his efforts.

The win was Hamlin’s second of the season.

The Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway was delayed due to the rain that cleared up later in the day. Dedicated NASCAR fans did not abandon their posts due to the weather, and the race had a substantial stadium crowd.
