Being unable to see or hear doesn’t dim the light in this dog’s heart one iota. For this double merle dog from Spokane, Washington, the best part of her day is when her human dad comes home. And it’s a sight to behold.

Perhaps because of bad breeding, Opal was born both blind and deaf. Yet other senses are often heightened when there are deficiencies elsewhere. Somehow, Opal is able to sense when her owner is about to arrive home from work each day.

The 8-month-old merle came to live with Christina Bray and her husband, Forrest, in their home after they had adopted her from Double J Dog Ranch, a dog rescue organization in Idaho in 2018.

While sitting on the porch in front of their house, Christina videoed the wonderful moment just before her husband arrived home from work in order to capture Opal’s uncanny ability to sense him from afar.

It might be some kind of internal clock, the vibration of Dad’s car motor in the distance, or maybe the smell of the exhaust, but somehow, she sensed something was coming. Nose raised into the air, Opal is scanning for something, excitedly.

“She waits in the front yard and waits to either feel or smell his car,” Bray wrote on her blog page. “Idk how she can tell the difference, because neighbor cars pull up and she doesn’t care. She then smells him and goes crazy. It’s very sweet!”

And when Dad appears at the gate, “Oh my!” Opal is already jumping up to kiss her savior. She knows it’s him! It’s truly a wonder to watch.
