A confused alligator paid an unexpected visit to a home in Venice, Florida, crawling all the way to the front porch of a house during the early morning hours on May 21. Homeowner Crawford B. Lewis was asleep at the time of the visit; however, the man’s Ring doorbell camera recorded the whole episode, and Lewis found it to be quite a surprise.

At around 5 a.m., the large alligator entered the porch area of Lewis’s home near the front door. The footage from the doorbell cam showed the reptile clamoring onto a bench before appearing to lunge at a sea turtle plaque decoration mounted on the wall, but unsuccessfully. Upon failing to latch onto its would-be prey, the reptile then tumbled back down onto the bench with a loud shudder.

Then, after a long pause to ponder its next steps, the alligator made its exit, sliding off the bench and exiting the front porch—but not before knocking over a potted plant on its way out.

Lewis, a resident of the Gran Paradiso Community, said that he was unaware of the surprise visitor at the time when it happened, but he got an alert from his Ring app later that day telling him that someone had been there. Upon seeing the video of the alligator, he was astonished.

“I’m glad I did not get up at 5:30 a.m. and open my front door,” Lewis joked.

The alligator was unharmed during the incident.
