Despite a roasting from critics, big-budget-remake of the 1981 film Clash of the Titans earned over $60 million in North America, twice as much as any other film this holiday weekend.
The film, which stars Sam Worthington as Perseus, was originally filmed in 2-D, but was later retrofitted with 3-D effects after the success of Avatar, which also starred Worthington in its lead.
Loosely based on Greek mythology, the story follows its protagonist who must behead Medusa and face the sea monster Kraken. Perseus is the son of a mortal mother, and father that is the god Zeus. The film co-stars Liam Neeson as Zeus and Ralph Fiennes as Hades.
Coming in second place with just over $30 million at the box office was Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too. Perry’s films have become a near lock on box office success and profits. Perry’s films are a mix of comedy and drama that often focus on relationships. His latest film stars Janet Jackson, Jill Scott, Louis Gossett Jr., as well as Perry himself.
In third place earning just under $30 million was the 3-D animated hit How to Train Your Dragon. In its second weekend, the film received unusually unanimous high marks from critics, appealing both to children and adults.
In fourth place, with a take of $16.2 million over the weekend and $25.6 million, since its opening last Wednesday, was Disney’s romantic drama The Last Song, starring Miley Cyrus. Based on a novel by romance writer Nicolas Sparks, (The Notebook), the film sees Cyrus in her first major role as she moves on from her childhood character Hannah Montana.
