The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on Tuesday said the vast majority of Americans consume too much sodium each day.
The agency said that around 90 percent of all Americans consume far more than the daily recommended amount of sodium each day. At present, the CDC recommends around 2,300 milligrams of salt each day while most Americans average around 3,300 milligrams in a day.
“Most of the sodium we eat comes from processed foods and foods prepared in restaurants,” the center said in a statement. It added that if all Americans reduce their sodium intake by 1,200 milligrams per day, it would save as much as “$20 billion a year in medical costs.”
Breads, rolls, packaged meats, pizza, processed poultry, soups, some kinds of sandwiches, popcorn, pretzels, and chips comprise 40 percent of where people get their sodium intake, the CDC said.
