Carey Mulligan has been offered the role of Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby, based on the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

In the novel, Buchanan is the title character Jay Gatsby’s object of affection, and the story is set in the Roaring Twenties in Long Island, New York. Buchanan is portrayed by Fitzgerald as shallow and primarily seeks only fame and fortune. The book has become a staple in high school English classes nearly everywhere.

Leonardo DiCaprio is slated to play Gatsby in the Baz Luhrmann film, and Tobey Maguire will play Nick Carraway.

Mulligan, 25, received a phone call from Luhrmann while she was on the red carpet at the Fashion Council Awards show in New York, according to the Reporter.

NY Magazine’s Culture Vulture blog reported last week that Mulligan was being considered for the part ahead of Scarlett Johansson, who has other filming commitments.

For her performance last year in An Education, Mulligan was nominated for an Academy Award. She recently appeared in Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps.

Luhrmann released a statement to deadline.com regarding his selection.

“Specific to this particular production of The Great Gatsby, I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her: ‘Hello, Daisy Buchanan,’” he told the website.
