Alice in Wonderland remained the top draw at the movies for the third week in a row. The re-imagining of Lewis Carroll’s classic takes Alice at 19-years-old played by Aussie Mia Wasikowska. The film pulled in another $35 million, fending off challenges from films of a variety of genres.
In second place was the opening weekend for Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the first book in a popular series by author Jeff Kinney. Adaptations from popular books series and comics have proved a safer-than-usual bet for studios, with the likes of Harry Potter, Twilight, and Iron Man each creating over a billion dollars.
Just behind Wimpy, with about $20 million at the box office, was the Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler film The Bounty Hunter. Butler is the latest actor inserted into an Aniston romantic comedy. She has also starred opposite Aaron Eckhart, Owen Wilson, and Vince Vaughn, and remains quite popular with movie-goers.
In a distant fourth, with just over $6 million in sales, was action/sci-fi Repo Men. Starring Jude Law and Forest Whitaker, the film imagines a futuristic world where artificial organs can save lives, though they can also be repossessed should one fall behind on the monthly payments.
