Bumble Bee tuna was recalled by the company after it said that 5-ounce cans of tuna might be contaminated by loose seals or seams.
Bumble Bee Foods LLC is recalling its 5-ounce canned tuna, citing concerns that the fish might spoil, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The recall, which was announced Wednesday, encompasses cans of Chunk White Albacore and Chunk Light Tuna, according to the FDA.
“The recall has been issued because the products do not meet the company’s standards for seal tightness,” the agency said in a statement on its website.
Loose seals or seams might result in contamination of the fish. Organisms or pathogens could get into the product and could lead to illness if the tuna is consumed, it said.
However, there have not been any reports of illness or problems associated with the products.
The cans were distributed by retailers countrywide between Jan. 17 and Feb. 28 of this year. They have a best-by date of Jan. 16, 2016 through Jan. 18, 2016.
The products include Bumble Bee Brand and Brunswick Brand.
“Due to can integrity concerns, our top priority at this time is to remove these recalled products from distribution as soon as possible,” Bumble Bee Foods SVP of Technical Services and Corporate Quality Assurance Steve Mavity said in a statement issued by the FDA.
He added: “We are working closely with our sales team and with retailers to help expedite the recall. We must assure our consumers and retailers of a safe and quality product so we very much appreciate everyone’s part in disposing of the products with the specific codes indicated.”
Those who have bought the recalled products should throw them in the garbage, the company said.
