HONG KONG—Twelve Men’s teams and 12-Women’s teams gather at the Hong Kong Football Club this coming weekend Saturday Aug 23 and Sunday Aug 24 for the first leg of the ARFU Asian Rugby 7’s Series 2014.
The Asian 7’s series will comprise 3-rounds (2-rounds for women), one each in Hong Kong, Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur—Sept 6-7) and China (Shanghai—Oct 18-19) In this competition there will be 20 teams taking part 12 men’s team and 8-women’s.
Men’s teams will include China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, UAE.
The women’s competition will have just 2-rounds (Hong Kong and China) with teams from China, Hong Kong, Japan, Kazakhstan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand taking part.
The Asian Sevens Series is seen as increasingly important this year as the first 2-rounds are seen as a tune-up for the men’s and women’s Rugby Sevens at the 17th Asian Games in Incheon at the end of September.
Asian U20 Sevens Series
In the Asian Rugby Football Union Under 20s sevens series in Johor Bahru, Malaysia last weekend Aug 16 and 17 Hong Kong won the first of a two-leg series. The teams taking part were Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan.
Hong Kong won all of their matches in the Round-Robin stage beating UAE, Uzbekistan and hosts Malaysia on day-1, and continued their winning form on day-2 winning a close match against Thailand 14-6 and then beating Singapore 43-5. Hong Kong beat Malaysia 25-14 in the final to top the table on 6-points
The second leg of this series will be held in Hong Kong on Dec 20 and 21, 2014.
