Jared Lee Loughner received seven life sentences for the Arizona shooting rampage in early 2011 that left six people dead and 13 people injured, including former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
Loughner, a 24-year-old college dropout, was given the sentences by U.S. District Judge Larry A. Burns on Thursday, reported the Arizona Daily Star.
“The consecutive sentence nature of the life sentences I think reflect the individuality of the victims ... each of those victims was important and made wonderful contributions,” Burns said, according to the Daily Star.
At the hearing, Lougher did not speak.
Victim Mavy Stoddard spoke to Loughner: “I forgive you, I do not hate you, I hate the act you did,” reported CBS-5 in Arizona.
Mark Kelly, the husband of Giffords, said, “You may have put a bullet through her head, but you have not put a dent in her spirit and commitment to make the world a better place.”
Kelly said that his wife is partially blind, she struggles to walk, and her right arm is paralyzed.
