Viewers of American Idol will be able to vote for their favorite singer via their Facebook accounts.
Sources told Entertainment Weekly on Wednesday that users will be able to access a dedicated Idol Facebook page where they can cast their votes. Users can vote as many as 50 times in a voting period.
The popular FOX show’s online voting change is expected to take effect on Tuesday, March 1, according to the report. The FOX Broadcasting Company did not make any direct comments to Entertainment Weekly regarding the matter.
In addition to the Idol, former Idol judge Simon Cowell’s show The X Factor will also get a similar voting feature, the U.K.’s The Sun reported.
“It makes perfect sense as The X Factor has one of the youngest, most media-savvy audiences of any show in the world,” a source told The Sun.
According to the newspaper, Cowell said that he hopes the Facebook voting feature comes out when The X Factor makes its U.S. debut this fall.
“For Simon it makes voting easier for millions of fans. And for Facebook, it encourages millions more to join and get involved in the interactive aspect of the show,” the source told The Sun.
