A bizarre-looking fish that some claimed was an “alien” is actually just an albino shark of a rare variety.

Fishermen reeled in the shark, identified by experts later as a swell shark, from the ocean off the coast of Cabo, Mexico.

The shark is colored white and pink because it’s albino, as swell sharks don’t normally have that sort of pigmentation.

The picture was posted online by Pisces Sportfishing Fleet, with the caption: “ALIEN FISH IN CABO?” Many said the photo was an April Fools’ Day joke.

“I was really surprised but what caused most impact were the eyes, so strange,” Jaime Rendon, the captain who caught the fish, was quoted as saying.

He guessed that it was some kind of shark at first. The page noted that Rendon released the shark back into the wild after he snapped photos of it.
