1985 message in a bottle: A message in a bottle that was written in 1985 washed up on a riverbed in Croatia, according to reports.
The message was written by a Canadian man to a woman named Mary and was found by surfers who were cleaning the Neretva river in the southern part of the Adriatic Sea, according to Reuters, citing a Croatian news website. They came across the message in a broken bottle.
“Mary, you really are a great person. I hope we can keep in correspondence. I said I would write. Your friend always, Jonathon, Nova Scotia, 1985,” the message reads.
Matea, a 23-year-old surfer who did not give her last name, said she nearly tossed it out but she then spotted the damp paper contained inside. “I picked up the bottle and I then realized that there was a letter,” she said, according to the CBC, also citing the website
It its unknown where Mary is from or who Jonathon is. The letter had no last names.
Canada.com noted that there is a 4,000-mile difference between Nova Scotia and Croatia. The bottle would have had to have traveled through the Strait of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean Sea before reaching the Adriatic.
