Heavy fog in southern Texas caused a 100-vehicle pileup, killing two people on Thursday morning, reported the Houston Chronicle.
The accident took place on Interstate 10 near Beaumont, around 80 miles from Houston, involving a number of tractor-trailers.
“It is catastrophic,” Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Rod Carroll told The Associated Press. “I’ve got cars on top of cars.”
Carroll, however, said that a number of drivers tried to help people who were involved in the crash. “It’s just people helping people,” Carroll said.
“The foremost thing in this holiday season is how other travelers were helping us when we were overwhelmed, sitting and holding, putting pressure on people that were injured,” he said.
Phil Kuhn with the National Weather Service told the Chronicle that “the caliber of fog we had today was severe.”
Officials were forced to close down both directions of Interstate 10 for most of the day.
