Aron Ralston, the man whose story is behind the newly-released film 127 Hours, recently shared some of his feelings on the harrowing ordeal he went through and on the movie itself.

Ralston had to cut off his right forearm to free himself from a trapped boulder that fell on him while he was backpacking in Utah several years ago.

Of James Franco’s performance, Ralston told Access Hollywood that he “portrays this character, me, with such an accuracy that even my family has said to me that after the first 15 minutes [of the film], they were no longer watching James in this role, they were watching me go through my experience.”

Franco worked quite a bit with Ralston to get into character and the role he played. “It’s a very authentic portrayal,” he said.

Ralston said that he has already seen the film 10 times. “[The experience] is something that I’m able to go back and remember, yes, the intense experience of the entrapment, but most importantly, the actual euphoria of getting out and back to my family,” he told Access.

Franco said that when he met Ralston, he wanted to portray his experience, he told CBS.

“One thing I said was, ‘I think it’s very interesting to see a human taken out of his environment and really forced to see what he’s made of,’” he told CBS. “‘And Aron didn’t like that answer. He said, ‘Well, thank you, but actually one of the things that really drove me was my connection to my loved ones.’”

127 Hours was directed by Danny Boyle and made its US debut last Friday, Nov. 5. Amber Tamblyn and Kate Mara also star as two hikers who Ralston meets before his ordeal.
