A knife-wielding suspect has been arrested after multiple people were stabbed early Sunday in downtown Boston, Massachusetts, officials said.

In a statement published on Oct. 16, Boston Police said that officers responded at about 2:10 a.m. to a report of a stabbing that took place in the area of Stuart and Tremont.

Law enforcement officials found two adult male victims at the scene, while a third adult male victim had taken himself to a local hospital, and a fourth man arrived at the hospital several hours after the incident.

“One of the male victims was found to have life-threatening injuries, the other three were found to have non-life-threatening injuries. All victims are expected to survive their injuries,” police said.

Following an investigation, officers arrested Daryl Diamond, 39, of Dorchester.

Diamond is expected to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on four counts of assault with intent to murder and four counts of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon; a knife, Boston Police said.

Police did not reveal what, if any, motive was behind the stabbings.

The latest incident comes shortly after civil rights leader Jean McGuire, 91, was stabbed multiple times while walking her dog in a Boston park last week.

Violent Crime on the Rise

Police said they believe McGuire, the first black woman elected to the Boston School Committee and a former director of the METCO desegregation program, was the victim of a random attack, CBS Boston reported.

McGuire was in stable condition last week in a local hospital and is expected to survive after sustaining “non-life-threatening” injuries during the attack, according to the report.

Police have not yet made any arrests in that incident but said the suspect may have also been injured.

Violent crime has soared across the United States and is yet to return to pre-pandemic levels, according to a midyear comparison survey from the Major Cities Chiefs Association published in September.

The survey found that there were 236,962 incidents of major crimes such as robberies and aggravated assaults reported in the first six months of 2022 compared to 226,967 in the same period in 2021.

A number of shooting incidents have prompted the Biden administration to tighten gun control laws and increase tougher background checks for firearm purchases in an effort to stop dangerous people from accessing firearms.

However, Republicans have regularly taken aim at Democrats’ “soft on crime approach” and have argued that measures such as restricting access to firearms are actually encroaching on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens.
