ALBANY, New York—Artist Raven Honsinger and her husband, Robert, who is a machinist, were delighted to attend Shen Yun Performing Arts’ evening show at Proctors Theatre on April 14. The show far exceeded their expectations.

“I loved it. I thought the soloists were incredible and the dance was great, obviously, but then the musical interludes in the middle were fantastic,” Mr. Honsinger said.

“We were right up front so we could look down into the orchestra pit. It was double pleasure for us to get front row seats, seeing the orchestra with the dancers was incredible.”

Mrs. Honsinger,  who is also very musical and plays the flute, agrees wholeheartedly.

“It was amazing,” she said. “It was such magic. Everything was just so beautiful. The sounds and the colors—it was just so beautiful. I don’t even know what else to say—it was magnificent.”

The music “brought me to tears, it brought me to laughter—every single emotion, all the highs and lows were in there. It was so amazing.”

According to its website, the name ‘Shen Yun” translates directly into “the beauty of divine beings dancing.” Based in New York, the artists have made it their mission to revive, through dance and music, China’s divinely inspired civilization to its pre-communist glory.
Its production is composed of a series of short pieces that take its audience on a ride through the dynasties and across the vast regions of China. Using classical Chinese, folk, and ethnic dances, as well as solo musical performances, the artists tell tales from ancient times to the modern day.
Mr. Honsinger thought Shen Yun’s story-based dances sent a very spiritual and positive message.

“It was a very moral story about being kind to each other and helping people, as opposed to being selfish or ignoring people who are less fortunate than you,” he stated. “It was a very positive message just about being humble and kind to each other.”

Reflecting on the piece raising awareness about the Chinese Communist Party’s ongoing persecution of the people of faith, Mrs. Honsinger said Shen Yun showed “the importance of freedom to practice spirituality, and the unfortunate reality that we live in a world where there’s places where we cannot.”

“Especially in this time, it’s a very relevant [message.] … It’s a good message,” Mr. Honsinger chimed in, adding that it’s “very endearing to see a lot of young people performing.”

“Knowing that they’ve gone to performing art schools and to come and be expressive and to perform a story that touches them in such a personal way—I love that they have the freedom to share that.”

“You could see the commitment. … I’m impressed with how many dances they performed and with the same performers. The amount of work that has to go into just learning every dance is incredible.”

If ever the chance to meet with Shen Yun’s performers comes up, Mrs. Honsinger said, “It would be amazing.”

“In the little moment that I got to see what they do, they seem magnificent. They seem like brilliant people, spiritual people [with] this softness on the inside, the strength on the outside. All that really spoke to me.”
