LYON, France—Shen Yun’s dazzling and moving world was performed at the Amphithéâtre 3000 from April 6 to April 12.

On April 11, Laurent Pech came to Lyon to experience a timeless moment with Shen Yun.

Mr. Pech is part of the executive management team at TravelAssist.io, a travel company that offers 24/7 connected assistance and concierge services for travelers and clients of travel agencies, tour operators, and other partners.

“The performance is fabulous,” he said. “The dancers are absolutely magnificent—highly skilled and incredibly artistic. It’s an amazing way to approach a performance: it’s not just about the dancing, but there’s a whole story behind it, and it’s truly fabulous.”

For Mr. Pech, Shen Yun is “very captivating because it’s both very gentle and very rhythmic. And having a real orchestra makes a big difference.”

The dance performances are accompanied by the Shen Yun Orchestra, which produces a unique sound by combining a traditional Western symphony orchestra with Eastern instruments such as the pipa, suona, and erhu.

Mr. Pech said he experienced “a wide range of emotions,” adding he was “deeply moved” by certain scenes, such as the “Birth of the Monkey King.”

“Shen Yun touches the heart because it tells stories through its scenes. It’s not just classical dance like what you see in France. Here, the scenes are different, so it’s naturally very captivating. Some scenes resonate with us more than others, but they’re all truly fascinating.”

Mr. Pech also praised “the interplay between technology, computer-generated imagery, and the performers: the synchronization between the two is truly magnificent.” He was referring to the animated digital backdrop—a unique, patented technology—that allows the dancers to move back and forth between the stage and the on-screen landscape.

Mr. Pech also stated he was deeply moved by the baritone, which he said “was incredible and really touched my heart, of course.”

The performance, he said, is “very gentle and fluid; everything flows seamlessly, actually—it’s like water: the performance can be very turbulent and then, all of a sudden, becomes very calm again. This feeling undoubtedly comes from the grace of the dancers.”

Reviving Divine Heritage

Shen Yun has made it its mission to revive authentic, deeply spiritual traditional Chinese culture. Indeed, the ancient Chinese believed in a culture inherited from the divine. “In ancient times, China was called the ‘Land of the Divine,’ evoking a world where deities and mortals lived together on Earth,” the company’s website states.

“It was said then that music, medicine, calligraphy, fashion, language, and many other aspects constituted a heritage passed down from the heavens. Buddhism, Taoism, and other disciplines were at the heart of society. Emperors sought the Way of Heaven, and daily life was punctuated by rituals connecting human beings to the divine.”

Shen Yun means “the beauty of divine beings dancing,” placing spirituality and a connection to the divine at the heart of its dance and song performances.

Mr. Pech was able to sense this spirituality through the balance between “physical strength and emotion—a kind of yin and yang that resonates with the audience. So the performers are fabulous, and the musicians are too.”

According to Mr. Pech, Shen Yun offers “a critical perspective on China, yet one that remains benevolent, as it highlights China’s magnificent traditions. I’ve had the chance to live in China for a while, but here, they really delve into authentic Chinese tradition and spirituality.”

For him, Shen Yun was very inspiring, offering “a sense of calm and perspective. It’s a break from everyday life—that’s what makes it so great. I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time, and I’m really glad to have had this opportunity to experience these traditions, these stories, and this world that’s both fantastical and very real.”

A Fresh Perspective

Jordan Bouilloux, a pharmaceutical scientist at the National Agency for Medicines Safety, also attended Shen Yun that night.

He said Shen Yun gave him “a different perspective from the somewhat formal one we usually see in the media, and introduced him to a performance that goes beyond the realm of ballet and classical European dance.”

He added: “The same goes for the musical instruments, with scenes that tell stories that we Europeans aren’t necessarily familiar with: it’s truly very impressive, very evocative—it’s truly a beautiful show.”

Mr. Bouilloux said he was impressed with the Shen Yun performers and their artistry.

“Flipping through the program, you realize that some artists have been part of the show from the very beginning, while others have just joined. To be perfectly honest, I can’t really tell who’s newer or not, because they’re all truly at a very high level—they’re all in perfect harmony.

“It’s truly a beautiful show that I’d recommend to as many people as possible—provided you can get tickets, since the house was packed tonight.”

Mr. Bouilloux said he went through a whole range of emotions while watching Shen Yun. “There’s the surprise of the digital backdrop technology, as well as the discovery of the story,” he said.

“It’s pretty rare to be able to laugh during a classical dance performance, so that’s already a plus for Shen Yun,” he said. “You get to see magnificent, colorful costumes, music featuring non-classical instruments, and new sounds—it engages all your senses.”

He was also struck by the performance’s spiritual dimension. “You can sense the divine quality in the dancers’ movements, which are a bit different from what we’re used to seeing,“ he said. ”With their grace and lightness, you get the feeling that there’s something a little less earthly about them than in other ballets.”

He also highlighted the kindness that radiates from the performance. “There’s a real sense of gentleness to it. We’re not here to impose an idea or to say, ‘I completely disagree.’ It’s more like, ‘Here’s what I have to offer—form your own opinion—but I’m presenting it to you with kindness. Take it or leave it; I’ll take you by the hand, and you follow me to see how far you can go.’”

According to Mr. Bouilloux, Shen Yun offers “a different perspective, allowing everyone to form their own opinion in a peaceful setting.”
