Free pretzels today: “National Pretzel Day” is today and a number of companies are looking to promote themselves by offering free pretzels.

Snyder’s of Hanover will be handing out samples of pretzels in their sample cart, according to ABC News.

The Philly Pretzel Factory, which has more than 100 locations in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, Florida and Colorado, is also giving out free pretzels to customers on Friday, according to Philly.com.

Pretzelmaker, which has 325 locations in 33 states, is offering a free pretzel if customers tell a “funny joke,” ABC points out. However, one can say “National Pretzel Day” to get a free pretzel instead.

Pretzels have been around for thousands of years, but it is unclear when they were first produced.

One famous account says that an Italian monk first produced the bread item in 610 AD to reward children who learn their prayers. There are also accounts saying they date back thousands of years to the time of the Greeks.
