NEW YORK—In spite of the federal shutdown, the Statue of Liberty is back open for business. The state of New York negotiated a deal with the federal government to reopen the national icon to tourists and New Yorkers alike starting on Oct. 13.
The Statue of Liberty, which has been closed since Oct. 29, 2012, due to damage sustained during Hurricane Sandy, is expected to reopen by the July 4 holiday.
The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island remain closed nearly 3 months after Hurricane Sandy with no repairs to begin until Hurricane Sandy Tax Relief Bill passes Congress.
Nearing its 125th anniversary, Liberty Enlightening the World, the official name for the statue, still stands strong as an international icon of freedom.
