A heroic 6-year-old helped save his mom’s life when she suffered from a seizure—by following instructions she taught him using a song about ambulances.
Teddy Wyatt called 999 after hearing shouting and weird noises coming from his 27-year-old mom, Emily Wyatt’s, bedroom.
Ms. Wyatt has epilepsy and was suffering from a severe episode.
“I’ve been playing him the Ambulance Song since he was 3 and drilling into him what to do if I start to have a seizure,” Ms. Wyatt said.
Realizing his mom was having a seizure, Teddy immediately dialed 999.
“The paramedics said he was amazing the whole time, staying on the phone and unlocking the door,“ Ms. Wyatt said. ”He even went and made sure his little brother, Reginald, was safely in bed and the stairgate was closed so he wouldn’t get hurt.”
Courageous Teddy is a premature baby who was born at 26 weeks gestation. He has autism and is currently going through ADHD consultations as well as attending a special education school.
Ms. Wyatt, a former caretaker, has suffered from epilepsy and type-1 diabetes for 12 years, ever since a traumatic experience in her childhood. She takes daily medication, including insulin, to keep her illness at bay.
While she has around four to five seizures a year, they’ve always occurred during the daytime, and she has thus been able to call someone to help her and the kids when she recognizes the dizzy feeling that preempts a seizure.
However, she says, the latest seizure— which lasted for over three hours—was the worst yet and even caused hyperthermia.
After a day at the hospital, Ms. Wyatt was able to fully recover. However, since the incident, little Teddy has been constantly worried about his mother and has been regularly checking on her.
“When I didn’t respond to him last night, he came running in to ask if I was okay, “ Ms Wyatt said. ”He’s such a superstar.”
Ms. Wyatt said she’s glad that she drilled the number 999 into Teddy’s memory and believes that he'll never forget it now.
“The Ambulance Song,” was released by U.S. children’s entertainer Blippi in 2020 and has been viewed more than 10 million times on YouTube.
A part of the song states: “You can call it up in emergencies. The siren turns on and it races to the scene. Some are yellow and green, some red, white, or blue. But they’re all here to help me and you.”
Ms. Wyatt looks after Teddy and Reginald and lives 10 minutes away from their father, Chris Wyatt, 28, a bricklayer.
