When Kael Lim was 2, he walked up to his father’s microphone, put on a headset, and began to sing. He belted out “Rain, Rain, Go Away.”

Little did Kael know that he would soon begin a successful music career.

Today, Kael is a 6-year-old making waves on the Internet. He and his father have a combined total of over 400,000 followers on Instagram alone. Together, they sing covers of old American songs. Their music has spread far and wide, and, in today’s age of depression and anxiety, they have touched the hearts of people from all over the world.

Originally from the Philippines, Kael and his parents now live in Chicago. They are a very musical family.

“We love singing!” Kael’s dad, Jan Gabriel Lim, told The Epoch Times.

The family’s journey to America began in 2013. That was when Mr. Lim arrived in the United States. For over half a decade, he was only able to visit his family for one month each year. The arrangement was difficult; Mr. Lim saw Kael growing up through video calls, and he dreamed of being reunited with his family.

In 2023, the trio settled in America for good. Kael and his parents are glad to be together again. “It’s been tough, but now we’re stress-free,” Mr. Lim said.

Despite sometimes missing his relatives in the Philippines, when asked if he likes American life, Kael had a simple answer: “Yeah!”

Watch the dad-son duo sing Michael Jackson’s “Heal The World,” Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love,“ Carpenters’ ”I Won’t Last A Day Without You,” and Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way.”

The Musical Journey

Musical talent seems to run in the Lim family. Their extended family also enjoys making music. Mr. Lim’s father loves to sing. His mother? “No, she just loves to dance,” Mr. Lim said with a laugh.
Throughout Mr. Lim’s childhood, old American songs were played in his home. He grew up listening to Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson. Now, he passes their music on to his son. And little Kael delivers Elvis Presley classics like “Can’t Help Falling in Love” like a pro.

When Kael was 4, he was introduced to a song that would change his life. During a trip to the grocery store, he heard “How Deep is Your Love” by the Bee Gees being played on the store’s speakers. He was drawn to the music.

“And he just started singing,” Mr. Lim said.

When they came home, Mr. Lim recorded Kael’s cover of the song. It wasn’t long before their recording went viral. Millions of viewers enjoyed seeing the little boy singing the pop classic.

In January, Mr. Lim recorded “How Deep is Your Love” again. This time, he and his son sang together. Once again, the video received much recognition. They did a third recording in February, together with Kael’s aunt. That cover, too, received more of a response than Kael’s other songs.
His recording of “How Deep is Your Love” has scaled Kael’s reach. People all over the world seem to love his rendition of this song. It’s no surprise that Kael ranks it among his favorites. Another favorite is “A Million Dreams” from The Greatest Showman. Other artists he loves include Justin Bieber and Michael Jackson.

Mr. Lim says that Kael is exceptionally quick at learning music, and because the young singer will soon be reading, learning songs will become even easier.

“If I let him hear a song, he could hum it right away, and then I'll just teach him the lyrics,“ Mr. Lim said. ”And then he could just sing it.”

Over the years, Mr. Lim has built up a sizable collection of music equipment. This equipment is put to use in the family’s home studio. From this small space, the passionate 6-year-old artist reaches a multitude of listeners from all over the world.

When he sings, he often closes his eyes and dances along to the music. He hits each note with all of his heart.

The response to Kael’s music is always overwhelmingly positive, whether he sings alone or with his father. Supportive comments flood his social media accounts. Mr. Lim says people are loving their father-and-son duets.

Mr. Lim describes Kael as a “jolly kid.” He says his son is mischievous but also quite introverted. Despite his shy tendencies, Kael hopes to become a professional singer and achieve fame. Singing seems to expel his introverted nature.

The proud dad enjoys singing just as much as his son does. Mr. Lim never took any lessons; he has always sung just for fun. Kael, however, has expressed interest in taking singing classes.

‘Family Bonding Is the Most Important Thing’

The 28-year-old dad wants to use his platform on social media to convey the importance of family bonding. Mr. Lim describes time with family as “the most important time.”

It’s easy to see the love the Lim family shares. Kael adores his parents, and Mr. Lim describes his wife as his “number one supporter!” Mrs. Lim enjoys watching the father-son duet.

“I’m always all smiles,” Mrs. Lim said of her feelings when they sing.

Mr. Lim and Kael play together, watch television together, and even cook together. Their favorite thing to do, however, is sing. Singing has strengthened their bond immensely. Before singing a duet, they can often be seen showing their affection for one another. And their father-and-son duets are only just getting started.

“We’ll sing more,” Mr. Lim said. And sing they will.

From “A Million Dreams” to “How Deep is Your Love”, this pair can sing just about anything. Their musical journey has only just begun.
