Just over one in five Canadians (22 percent) aged 55 to 59 reported in June 2023 that they were either completely or partially retired, according to Statistics Canada. The proportion doubled to more than two in five (45 percent) for those aged 60 to 64.
As the number of Canadians set to retire grows, a recent report has identified some great spots for these former workers to enjoy in the new phase in their lives, whether its on the west coast, east coast, or somewhere in between.

The list, compiled by luxury real estate company Sotheby’s International Realty Canada, did not rank by cost of living or affordability but rather looked at the quality of health-care facilities, welcoming communities, and “breathtaking” scenery.

Here are the top 10 places to retire in Canada, according to Sotheby’s.

Victoria, B.C.

One of Canada’s most popular retirement destinations, Victoria made the list for its mild climate and ocean views. The provincial capital, on Vancouver Island, allows retirees to stay active with several golf courses and dozens of parks and gardens. With a high population of doctors and top health-care facilities, it’s an ideal place to enjoy the golden years.

Parksville, B.C.

Parksville, also on Vancouver Island, is another one of three B.C. locations that made the list. About 150 kilometres north of Victoria, the city boasts the highest concentration of seniors per capita, Sotheby’s said. Parksville also has a mild climate, scenic golf courses and parks, and lots of possibilities for water activities including boating and kayaking.

Okanagan Valley, B.C.

This location in the B.C. interior offers retirees plenty of opportunities to enjoy year-round recreation outdoors, including boating on Okanagan Lake and skiing and snowboarding at a number of popular ski resorts. The Okanagan is also B.C.’s wine country and home to award-winning wineries along with farms and orchards.

Calgary, Alberta

Calgary, Alberta’s most populated city, has been growing and offers a vibrant culture and bustling city atmosphere. Retirees will also be able to access top health-care facilities, the real estate firm said. Calgary has been named the sunniest place in Canada, with about 333 days of sunshine each year.

Canmore, Alberta

Canmore is a neighbour of Calgary, about 81 kilometres to the west, nestled in the Rocky Mountains near the southeast boundary of Banff National Park. It’s also close to six other national parks. The town provides many opportunities for active living, with six golf courses, a thriving arts scene, and a welcoming community, Sotheby’s noted.

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

For those wishing to enjoy lots of cultural activities in retirement, Niagara-on-the-Lake has plenty to offer. From museums and galleries to award-winning restaurants and year-round events, the picturesque city on the shores of Lake Ontario has a rich history and vibrant culture. It’s also located in the heart of the province’s wine country.

Ottawa, Ontario

Along with its historic charm, the nation’s capital lets retirees enjoy an urban environment that offers plenty of choices for outings and activities. Ottawa has many museums, galleries, and entertainment venues as well as scenic parks. The city also has some of the best health-care facilities in Canada, Sotheby’s said.

Quebec City, Quebec

The European flavour of Quebec City, one of North America’s oldest cities, makes it an ideal spot for those looking to retire in an interesting urban atmosphere with a rich history. This spot also has the most doctors per capita in Canada, a low crime rate, and a more affordable cost of living than many other locations.

Fredericton, New Brunswick

As the capital of New Brunswick, Fredericton offers an array of cultural activities including museums, theatre, music festivals, and many historic sites. The city is located along the St. John River and has plenty of scenic walking routes and Victorian architecture to enjoy.

Halifax, Nova Scotia

Halifax is a city known for being welcoming and friendly, Sotheby’s said. The coastal city also has breathtaking views and plenty of of amenities including top health-care facilities and theatre and music venues. Halifax is one of the most popular retirement destinations in the Maritimes, according to the real estate company.
