Flash floods swept cars down the streets of cities on Tunisia’s Cap Bon Peninsula amid heavy rains.
The video above shows the torrent of floodwater flowing in on the coastal town of Nabeul in northeastern Tunisia, according to Storyful.
Two sisters died when they were swept away in floodwaters in Bou Argoub, France24 reported.
“They were trying to cross rising wadi waters to get back home,” Amir, a resident of the area, was quoted by the outlet as saying. A wadi is a river bed that is usually dry and are meant to allow for season rains to flow.
“The wadis have been abandoned for decades ... there is no maintenance,” Amir said. He said that the river beds are filled with trees, garbage, and other debris.
“It was raining since noon and (in the afternoon) it became torrential,” said Moncef Barouni, another local. “The wadi in front of our house was blocked by trees and the water flooded over the bridge and onto the road,” he was quoted as saying by France24.
France24 reported that the storm dumped nearly 8 inches of rain in Nabeul and more than 8 inches in Beni Khalled.
