UPS allegedly lost a man’s $846,000 inheritance, and the TD Canada Trust bank is allegedly refusing to refund the money.
“It was a total surprise” Lorette Taylor of Canada told the CBC.
Taylor and her husband, John, said they’re having a tough time trying to get the money back.
Taylor was in the process of finalizing details of her father’s will, and she was asked to disburse inheritances to her brother and sister, according to the report.
Her brother, Louis Paul Hebert said he was expecting a package from his sister and went to the UPS store near Cornwall, Ontario. The package never came. It contained his share of his inheritance, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
“I’m waiting at the UPS store, around 3 p.m. because that’s when they said the guys came in, nothing shows up,” Herbert told the CBC. “I came back in the evening. Nothing shows up… and I’m wondering, ‘What’s happened to my inheritance?'”
Taylor had sent the money through UPS from her lawyer about 270 miles away.
“I should have just driven,” Herbert said. “It’s something I kick myself in the rear over every day.”
Taylor got a bank draft, which is similar to a certified check, but the money is taken from a customer’s account right away until the draft is cashed. TD told Taylor that it was the safest way to sent the large sum of cash to her brother.
“They said a bank draft was more appropriate,” Taylor said. “Never in my wildest imagination did I think something like this would happen.”
UPS told the family that it was able to find the money via a parcel distribution center north of Toronto---but it said it could not locate it after that.
“While UPS’ service is excellent in our industry, we are unfortunately not perfect. Occasionally, the loss of a package does occur,” UPS spokeswoman Nirali Raval told the CBC.
“Our records indicate that our team followed UPS protocol and an exhaustive search for this package was completed by our Operations and Security teams. Unfortunately, we were unable to locate the package,” she added.
It refunded $32 to the family.
TD won’t refund the money unless Taylor signs an agreement to pay back the cash if someone cashes in the lost bank draft. “It also said that if something happened to me, for example, my children and my heirs and my spouse and my executor would have to pay this debt,” she told the broadcaster. “Well, I didn’t really want to sign this.”
“If the bank really wants indemnity, then UPS should sign it,” she said.
Hebert, 61, is frustrated.
“TD has the money. The money is actually sitting in an account with TD. Nothing has been stolen. It’s there. That’s my inheritance,” he said.
“I would have been retired.”
