RCMP have found human remains in a small Prince Edward Island village believed to be connected to the disappearance of a 17-year-old boy. Two youths were arrested on the evening of Dec. 19 in connection with the case.
RCMP officers located the human remains on Sorrie Road in the village of Milltown Cross in the early morning of Dec. 20.
“The investigation is ongoing and several charges are expected to be laid later, including homicide,” RCMP Supt. Kevin Lewis, acting commanding officer for P.E.I., said during a press conference in Charlottetown on Dec. 20.
The identity of the remains has yet to be confirmed, but are believed to be those of a P.E.I. teenager missing since Dec. 14. Supt. Lewis said the RCMP is working with the coroner’s office to make an identification.

Search for Missing Teen

The search for the missing teen, which began on Dec. 15, was taken over three days later by the RCMP Major Crime and General Investigations Unit. The teen was last seen getting into a dark-coloured car on Dec. 14 at 7:15 p.m. in Caledonia, P.E.I., RCMP said.
“We are not defining the offence at this time but we can say that we are investigating this as a crime,” the RCMP said in a Dec. 18 press release. “Few details of this investigation are available at this time in order to protect the integrity of this investigation.”
The search included the use of RCMP Atlantic Air Services helicopters, RCMP drones, and police dog services as well as aid from officers from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
An RCMP helicopter and the RCMP Atlantic Divisions Tactical Support Group began searching for evidence in areas of Kings County on Dec. 19, according to a press release issued that day.
“The RCMP on PEI are utilizing all available resources to help bring a conclusion to this heart-wrenching situation,” Supt. Lewis said at the time.
During the Dec. 20 press conference to announce the arrests and discovery of human remains, he said such incidents have a “deep and difficult impact” on the families involved as well as on the community at large.
“A tremendous effort has been put into this investigation,” Supt. Lewis said in a Dec. 20 press release. “We hope that with these developments we can bring some closure to the loved ones of the deceased.”
