Tory MP Crispin Blunt, 63, has self-confirmed his identity as the individual arrested by Surrey Police in Horley today on suspicion of rape and the possession of controlled substances.
He has been suspended by the Conservative Party pending the conclusion of the investigation.
Mr. Blunt, the former minister responsible for prisons and probation, declared his willingness to cooperate fully with the investigation. He stated on social media, “The arrest was unnecessary as I remain ready to cooperate fully with the investigation that I am confident will end without charge.”
Mr. Blunt, the MP for Reigate, disclosed that he had been interviewed twice regarding the incident, with the first interview occurring three weeks ago when he reported concerns about extortion.
He emphasised his intention to refrain from further comments until the police complete their inquiries, reiterating his confidence in a resolution without charges.
A Surrey police spokesperson said: “We can confirm a man was arrested yesterday morning in Horley on suspicion of rape and possession of controlled substances. He has been released on conditional police bail pending further inquiries.”
The Tory Party has chosen not to provide a statement regarding his arrest. However, Conservative chief whip Simon Hart confirmed to PA Media that he had instructed Mr Blunt to stay away from Parliament throughout the proceedings.
Mr. Blunt joins a series of sitting MPs who have faced arrests on charges related to sexual offences.
Since the 2019 election, at least 11 MPs have been suspended for investigations into sexual misconduct.
Mr. Blunt’s arrest comes a week after the Tories party removed the whip from MP Peter Bone after he was found to have committed bullying and sexual misconduct against a staff member more than ten years ago.
