Former Postmedia columnist Sabrina Maddeaux is the latest media personality saying she wants to run as a candidate for the Conservatives ahead of the next federal election.

Ms. Maddeaux, a former columnist for the National Post, announced her candidacy for the Tory nomination in the riding of Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill in Ontario on Jan. 17 post on social media platform X.
In a video posted on X, Ms. Maddeaux introduces herself as being part of the first generation of Canadians to be “worse off than their parents,” citing an “urgent need for change” on Parliament Hill while blaming the policies of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government.

“I am proud to be from Richmond Hill, but it’s also sadly a place where I may never be able to afford to own a home of my own,” she says. “Like many millennials, I was locked out of home ownership after prices more than doubled in eight years under Trudeau’s watch. It shouldn’t be a luxury to raise a family in the community you grew up in.”

Other notable media personalities have joined the Conservatives over the past year.

Former journalist and radio host for Bell Media, Jamil Jivani, made a public announcement last April expressing his intention to seek the Conservative party nomination for the Durham riding in Ontario following former MP Erin O'Tooles’ decision not to seek reelection.

Jivani emerged victorious in the nomination contest on Aug. 20, 2023, overcoming his opponent Theresa Corless, who previously chaired the Durham Catholic School Board.
Activist and filmmaker Aaron Gunn secured the nomination from the Conservative Party for the riding of North Island-Powell River in B.C. in early December. In a social media post on Dec. 1, Mr. Gunn expressed his enthusiasm about the journey ahead, stating his commitment to support Pierre Poilievre in becoming Canada’s next prime minister.

Mr. Gunn had declared his intention to run for the nomination in September, saying he was motivated by his observations of the declining living standards in Canada. He highlighted key concerns such as health care, public safety, and rising living costs.

Dr. Matt Strauss, known for speaking out against pandemic mandates and lockdowns during his tenure as the acting medical officer of health for Haldimand-Norfolk in Ontario, successfully clinched the Conservative nomination in late November for the Kitchener South-Hespeler riding, which is also his hometown.

He gained recognition for his vocal stance on social media against public health measures, advocating against lockdowns and mask mandates while supporting targeted interventions directed at those most vulnerable.
