Rescuers have been searching for Pierre Agnes, 54, the chief executive of Quiksilver surfwear and sporting company, who got lost at sea off France on Tuesday morning, Jan. 30. His boat has been found washed ashore.
Agnes intended to do some solo fishing in Capbreton near his home in Southwest France. He left the harbor around 7:30 a.m. He then messaged port authorities saying he’d delay his return due to thick fog, The Guardian and The Daily Mail reported.
At about 9:30 a.m., his boat, a 36-foot Mascaret III was found washed ashore north of La Graviere, according to Surfline.
Agnes was “a seasoned sailor who was used to fishing in the area,” a Quiksilver spokesman in France said.
Three helicopters and two boats were searching the rough seas. Wind was light and visibility clear.
Agnes has been with Quiksilver (now Boardriders), for nearly 30 years. He moved from the president post to become the CEO in 2015, as the company struggled with repeated losses, the Orange County Register reported. It filed for bankruptcy in 2015 and was acquired by Boardriders in early 2016.
